TrailBound Learning Co.//adapt.encourage.play

Welcome to Juniper Crossing Practice’s TrailBound Learning page! We’re so glad you’ve found your way here. TrailBound Learning is a unique branch of Juniper Crossing, specifically created by Kayli, based off of both her personal and professional outdoor experiences. As the foundational value of Juniper Crossing is to inspire the extraordinary in people through authentic connection and loving accountability, TrailBound’s trips are meant to facilitate this through adaptability, encouragement, and playfulness.

So what is a TrailBound Learning trip and why go? Well, as you read further, you’ll discover that Kayli has put together a variety of trips for a variety of folks — there are opportunities to camp, hike, backpack, and connect with the natural world as Kayli facilitates opportunities for both therapeutic insight and personal growth moments. A key component of each of these trip experiences is allowing for parallel processes to play out, both individually and within a group setting. That is — whatever a person may be experiencing within the natural word (i.e. frustration with the difficulty of making a fire) could parallel an emotional reaction or thought process in another part of their daily lives or relationships (i.e. how else do you find yourself frustrated when faced with a difficult relationship or circumstance?). While this may seem simple, this experiential process allows for each person to anchor insights and reflections more firmly within their bodies and minds. There also tends to be more of a capacity for learning when fully immersed in this manner. So — if this sparks any interest in you, we encourage you to read on!

What this trip is about: Learning. We know what we know. We know what we don’t know. And then we don’t even know what we don’t know…need to read that again? This trip will create space for you to be a student. We will play, we will work hard, we will anchor our insights and skills gained, and we will do it together.

What we will be doing: We will be backpacking!!! That’s right — hiking with packs, day hiking, cooking, camping, discussing and mindfully reflecting. We’ll be out in the field for 5 days and 4 nights. There will be a daily agenda that will include both learning and implementing hard skills and soft skills as well as time with the group and time to yourself.

2022 women’s trip — pikes peak summit trip review.

At the end of August/beginning of September, a group of 7 courageous ladies joined us for a hiking trek up Pike’s Peak, which stands at 14,115 feet. Each person successfully summited — YAHOO!!! What a crew. These women worked it out — physically, mentally and emotionally — with every step up the mountain. Not only did they show up with courage for the physical adventure, they also showed up with courage in their sharing and connection with each other. Gosh, what a privilege to be a part of this experience with them — witnessing their individual journey as well as joining in the collective experience.

While the verdict is still out on if the donuts and potato wedges at the summit house are even worth it :) — there was definitely agreement that the accomplishment of reaching the top of the mountain was certainly worth every. single. step. Way to go, gals. The TrailBound crew could not have been more grateful for each of you being willing to trust us and to go for it.

Below are comments from the ladies on their experience of the trip:

“I can do hard things and anything I set my mind to! We're all fighting our own battles and kindness to each other goes so far and is really important to express…this week reminded me of who I really am and what I am capable of…I wish that everyone could get to experience something like this.” — Margo M.

“Mountains are hard — the physical mountains and the mental mountains…my experience was that this was hard but very rewarding.” — Katie T.

“I am still reflecting on the trip…It has added so much to my life and my own healing. It has shown me what I am capable of. It was emotional, uncomfortable, enlightening, and raw because it helped me feel the emotions and thoughts I needed to feel. I would love to do another trip like this! it was absolutely amazing!” — Kamryn H.

“Words matter even if it’s the slightest bit of encouragement it can make someone’s day turn around completely…I grew a ton on this trip and I don’t think you could put a dollar amount on [that]. Easily one of the most beautiful, challenging, eye-opening, and soul filling experiences.” — Nicole C.

“Personal growth and development sometimes need to be scheduled and planned out. I really enjoyed peaking the mountain, it was a big self-esteem booster. I look up to Kayli so much and this trip reinforced [that]. She encouraged us to push our limits but there wasn’t a moment when I felt pressured of uncomfortable. And I really appreciate that about her…[this was] something I didn’t know I needed that I’m glad I invested in.” — Hayley S.

A few things to note (PLEASE READ):

  • Weather is always a factor! What a wonderful reminder of how little we have control over. Trips will be able to accommodate moderate rain/snow (which is typical in Colorado!), but please know that any big storm systems may create the need to delay a trip or reschedule it. We ask for a flexible mindset and we are committed to prompt communication with participants on weather details.

  • A minimum of 6-8 participants are needed for each trip. If there are less than 6-8 signed up, participants will be given the option to jump in on a different trip and costs will be adjusted accordingly, or participants will be fully refunded if they choose to opt out. You will be notified if a trip has been cancelled as soon as the registration deadline has been reached.

  • These trips are open to anyone! They are optional for clients of Juniper Crossing, clients referred by other mental health providers, and for the general public. While programming components of these trips will still be intentionally focused on personal exploration and growth, they are not considered therapeutic and are not reserved for clients only. However, clients are welcome to participate as a supplement to their therapy work and any client/therapist relationships will be kept strictly confidential.

  • You are welcome to setup a payment plan for your trip! Once you’ve signed up, Kayli will contact you directly regarding securing your spot and any final registration details. At that time, you will be asked to put a method of payment on file, and you will be given the option to pay in full or to setup a payment plan. The deadline for full payment for a trip will coincide with the deadline to register for that trip.

  • The cost for each trip includes logistics meetings, all food & group gear, first aid supplies, campsite reservations/commercial permits, and on site facilitators. Costs do not include personal travel expenses, or personal gear. Kayli will provide a comprehensive gear list and suggestions for affordable options upon participant registration.

  • Trip locations are subject to change due to commercial permitting processes.

Kayli’s knowledge and experience

Along with her licensure as a Marriage & Family Therapist and as a Registered Yoga Teacher, Kayli is certified in Wilderness First Aid through the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) & CPR through the American Red Cross. On a personal level, Kayli enjoys many of her own adventures with her dog, Levi. She recalls first being drawn into the solace of the outdoors when she was a kid living in Alaska. She would often find herself wandering to the creek that was a mile or so away from her house, with her two dogs, on long summer days. She found peace among the sounds found in the wild, along with a deep respect for nature and all that it holds. In college, she began dabbling in more hiking and mountain climbing. While she actually did not complete her first mountain summit opportunity due to fear, it sparked a desire in her to acknowledge these personal limitations and to keep at it, in hopes of expanding her capabilities.

Fast forward to a job in Houston a few years later that gave her the unique opportunity to travel and work in a therapeutic role with teens and young adults while out on extended backcountry trips. This experience inspired growth in Kayli in her skills as a clinician, in her backcountry knowledge, and in learning to integrate the two. Now, as a Colorado resident, she has the pleasure of creating and offering a variety of therapeutic backcountry trips as a private practitioner.

Since 2012, Kayli has summited a handful of mountains over 13,000 feet in elevation, has traversed several mountain passes, and has explored wilderness areas in Colorado, Utah, Oregon, and Idaho. She’s also hiked a small section of the Appalachian Trail and white water rafted through the Grand Canyon. She and Levi, who is a certified therapy dog, are so excited to invite you into the exploration of nature and into experiencing how it both nurtures and challenges our own inner worlds and perspectives. We hope you’ll join us!
